First Fish Tagged of 2024

Aloha All,

Thank you to all that have participated and supported the PIFG Tagging Program through the years. This program has been the foundation for much of the work PIFG has done to perpetuate fisheries knowledge, show the interconnectedness of our resources, and help tell the story of our fisheries. PIFG’s vision is to make the tagging more streamlined, easy to access for our taggers, and information to be near real-time.

To accomplish this PIFG has been working to build a new website along with redesigning our tagging project page. As of September 2023, PIFG set up a new system for submitting tags that can be accessed at Link. This has been in operation since September 2023 and we are grateful for all the taggers already using it. The most important piece of this program is supporting our volunteer taggers and we want to make sure the information is making it back to all of you. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this upgrade. We look forward to your continued support and participation.

Since the new system has been operational since September 2023 we have received 37 submissions and 1 retagged released fish.

The First Fish Tagged in 2024 goes to Thad Nakajima on January 7th, 2024! Thad will receive a PIFG Tag It shirt.

Some other highlights include:

  • Cale Fernandez with 11 White Papio tagged

  • Keith Kamikawa with six oio tagged

  • Eric Suzuki with 10 white papio/omilu tagged

  • Ladd Yoshimura with a beautiful Golden Paopao tagged

  • Camden Arrand with a 38” White Ulua on the popper tagged

We also had a recapture (and re-released) by Tommy Cabanting of a white ulua - Tag # A12320

Congratulations to all who were able to get out and tag fish in 2023 and are actively participating in 2024. We will continue to share updates and opportunities to get engaged in the coming months. PIFG will also be sharing more technical reports and insights as we look at the data of interesting recaptures.
