Our Mission

In 2007, Pacific Islands Fisheries Group (PIFG) started Tag-It: a volunteer-based cooperative fish tagging program designed to continue the once popular Hawaiʻi Division of Aquatic Resources’ (DAR) Ulua Tagging Project and expand it across commonly targeted species in Hawaiʻi’s nearshore recreational hook-and-line fishery.

Our “One-Stop Tag Shop” design streamlines the whole process: distribution of supplies, data collection, and logging recaptures. Using the same tags across a variety of species also reduces the confusion of having multiple ongoing tagging projects in Hawaiʻi’s fisheries.

The data compiled through this project will be used to improve our scientific understanding of Hawaiʻi’s nearshore fisheries and hopefully better inform future management decisions.
