Workshop for fishers on Shark Depredation, the history, deterrence, mitigation.

The Pacific Islands Fisheries Group in coordination with local fishers is hosting it’s 4th workshop on Shark Depredation under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program (BREP). This grant provided to PIFG has allowed for fishermen to connect, share, and record traditional knowledge around shark depredation and ways to decrease interactions with shark across the Pacific Islands Region. Fishers in American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, and now Hawaii will have the opportunity to gather and share their feedback to help improve shark depredation for the future.

The goals and outcomes of the work and meetings is to identify traditional practices for avoidance and mitigation, reduce impact on economic success of fishers, and reduce impact on shark populations.
