PIFG Community Engagement Marianas Islands
5 March 2025 Honolulu, HI: Pacific Islands Fisheries Group Staff recently returned from facilitating meetings across the Marianas Islands including Saipan, Rota, Tinian, and Guam as part of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Council Effort to engage with the communities across the region and understand threats to fishing practices, challenges, and environmental change.
The staff heard of issues and concerns and observed changes by fishermen and their communities. Some of the big takeaways included: Shark depredation, Military expansion, warming ocean water, absence of seasonal runs of specific species such as Atulai and manahak, Tiao, and I’e.
