PIFG Presents Community Work at Waianae Neighborhood Board
3 June 2025: Pacific Islands Fisheries Group was invited to present at the Waianae Neighborhood Board, providing comments and feedback from the recent community consultation meeting to members of the audience, the Waianae Neighborhood Board, and online attendees.
The presentation provided an overview of some of the challenges faced by the Waianae fishing community including:
"More thrill craft and dolphin tours—disturbing ecosystem."
"Protected species (seals) damaging nets—no recourse."
"Can catch 1M lbs akule but price only went up $1/lb in 20 years."
"Fish getting smarter—have to use lighter line”
These challenges and information aligned with PIFG’s broader work under the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council’s Community Consultation effort, where PIFG is contracted to plan and implement 68 meetings over the next two years on behalf of the Fishery Council across the region.
